Holy Roman empress (1528-1603)
She ruled Spain in her father's name at twenty, then became empress of the Holy Roman Empire — power she wielded not as decoration but as one of the empire's most formidable consorts.
Born 21 June 1528, Maria of Austria stood in for Emperor Charles V as regent of Spain from 1548 to 1551, governing at an age when most noble daughters were still waiting for a marriage to define them. That marriage came when she wed Maximilian II, who brought her the triple crown: Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Bohemia, Queen of Hungary. She didn't retreat into ceremony. Over decades she became one of the most powerful empresses the Holy Roman Empire had seen, shaping policy and holding influence until her death on 26 February 1603.
