Queen of Bohemia
An Austrian archduchess who became Holy Roman Empress through marriage, ruling beside her husband Charles VII in an era when the title itself was slipping from Habsburg hands for the first time in centuries.
Born 22 October 1701, Maria Amalia Josefa Anna entered the world as the daughter of Emperor Joseph I, an archduchess by blood in the heart of Habsburg power. Her marriage bound her to Charles VII, carrying her across a sweep of thrones: electress of Bavaria, queen of Bohemia, and eventually Holy Roman empress when her husband claimed the imperial crown. She bore him children, among them Maximilian III Joseph, who would himself become Elector of Bavaria. She died 11 December 1756, her life spent in the machinery of dynastic Europe, where bloodlines and crowns moved as one.
