Holy Roman empress
She carried two empires in her bloodline and wore a third by marriage, yet died at twenty-eight before her husband took the throne — a duchess of Bavaria who became Holy Roman Empress in title only, her years at court cut short.
Born 20 March 1739, Maria Josepha was the daughter of Charles VII, Holy Roman Emperor and elector of Bavaria, and Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria. Her marriage to Joseph II brought her a cascade of titles: Holy Roman Empress, Queen of the Romans, Archduchess of Austria, Grand Duchess of Tuscany. But Joseph ruled as co-regent alongside his mother during their marriage, and Maria Josepha never saw him ascend as sole emperor. She died 28 May 1767, twenty-eight years old, her position more genealogical footnote than lived power.
