Joseph Jacob Ignaz Johann Anton Eustachius was born 26 July 1678, eldest son of Leopold I and Eleonor Magdalene of Neuburg. Crowned King of Hungary in 1687 and elected King of the Romans in 1690, he inherited Bohemia and the Holy Roman Empire when his father died in 1705. He continued the War of the Spanish Succession, waging his father's fight to install his younger brother Charles as King of Spain; his military commander Prince Eugene of Savoy won the battles that established Austrian control over Italy. At the same time Joseph faced a long revolt in Hungary, stoked by the French king he was fighting in the west. Neither war had ended when he died on 17 April 1711. His motto was Amore et Timore - through love and fear - and like his father and grandfather, he composed music.
