Joseph Jacob Ignaz Johann Anton Eustachius was born 26 July 1678, eldest son of Leopold I and Eleonor Magdalene of Neuburg. Crowned King of Hungary in 1687 and elected King of the Romans in 1690, he inherited Bohemia and the Holy Roman Empire when his father died in 1705. He continued the War of the Spanish Succession, waging his father's fight to install his younger brother Charles as King of Spain; his military commander Prince Eugene of Savoy won the battles that established Austrian control over Italy.
