Biography

About

Margaret Thatcher studied chemistry at Oxford, worked as a research chemist and then a barrister, and entered Parliament in 1959 representing Finchley. After serving as Education Secretary under Edward Heath, she ousted him in 1975 to lead the Conservatives — the first woman to front a major British party. Winning in 1979, she launched economic policies to reverse high inflation and curb trade union power, though early recession and unemployment dimmed her standing.
