Napoleon's younger brother who handed him France. As president of the Council of Five Hundred in 1799, Lucien Bonaparte stage-managed the coup that dissolved the republic and made his sibling first consul—then spent the rest of his life in the long shadow he'd cast.
Born 21 May 1775, the third surviving son of Carlo Bonaparte and Letizia Ramolino, Lucien grew up in Corsica before the Revolution opened paths his family name alone never could. By 1799 he had climbed to Minister of the Interior and president of the Council of Five Hundred—the legislative body meant to check executive power. On 18 Brumaire that year, he used the position to orchestrate the coup that dissolved the council itself and installed Napoleon as first consul, arguing down resistance and summoning troops when deputies resisted.
