Pauline Bonaparte was born on 20 October 1780 in Corsica, the sixth child of Letizia Ramolino and Carlo Buonaparte, whose position as Corsica's representative to Louis XVI's court gave the family a foothold in French politics. Her elder brother Napoleon's rise made her an imperial princess, and in her first marriage to French general Charles Leclerc she had a son, Dermide, who died in childhood. Leclerc himself died in 1802, ending the union.
