French ornithologist
A French ornithologist who named dozens of bird species from three continents — many he'd never seen himself, working instead from the specimens and notes of explorers who lacked the taxonomic training to formalize their finds.
Louis Pierre Vieillot was born in Yvetot on 10 May 1748. He collected birds in the West Indies and went on to author the first scientific descriptions and Linnaean names for species from the Caribbean, North America, and South America — including many discovered by Félix de Azara and translator Sonnini de Manoncourt but left unnamed. He stood apart as one of the first ornithologists to observe live birds and track how their plumage changed over time, rather than relying solely on preserved specimens.
