King of West Francia from 936 to 954
A Carolingian king who earned his nickname—"from overseas"—by spending his childhood exiled in England while rival dynasties carved up his father's kingdom, then returning to claim a throne that barely held.
Louis was born in 920 or 921, the only son of Charles the Simple and Eadgifu of Wessex, daughter of England's King Edward the Elder. He became King of West Francia in 936 and ruled until his death on 10 September 954. The nickname d'Outremer stuck because of years spent across the Channel before his return. His reign survives in the historical record primarily through Flodoard's contemporary Annals and the later Historiae written by Richerus. He died at thirty-three or thirty-four, a Carolingian holding power in an age when that meant less each year.
