Lothair took the crown of West Francia on 10 September 954, inheriting a realm his family - the Carolingians - had ruled for generations. He reigned for over three decades, but the dynasty's grip was slipping; power had begun shifting to the rising Capetians. He died on 2 March 986, and with him went nearly the last flicker of Carolingian kingship in the west.
