Born around 966 or 967, Louis became co-king with his father Lothair in 979, stepping into a throne already hollowed out by aristocratic power. When Lothair died in 986, Louis ruled alone, though "ruled" overstates it - the nobility held the real levers. He lasted just over a year. On 22 May 987, he died childless at roughly twenty years old, and with him the Carolingian line in West Francia went dark.
