King of West Francia from 979 to 987
The last Carolingian king of West Francia reigned in name only while the nobility ran the country, then died at twenty without an heir — ending a dynasty that had ruled for over two centuries.
Born around 966 or 967, Louis became co-king with his father Lothair in 979, stepping into a throne already hollowed out by aristocratic power. When Lothair died in 986, Louis ruled alone, though "ruled" overstates it — the nobility held the real levers. He lasted just over a year. On 22 May 987, he died childless at roughly twenty years old, and with him the Carolingian line in West Francia went dark.
