Lev Markovich Shlosberg was born 30 July 1963 and built a career across opposition politics, human rights work, journalism, and history in Russia. He rose to lead the Pskov Oblast branch of Yabloko, the liberal opposition party, and held a seat on Yabloko's federal political committee. His investigative journalism and activism eventually put him on a collision course with the authorities. Memorial, the respected human rights organization, designated him a political prisoner - a recognition that his refusal to stay quiet had crossed into territory the state considered dangerous.
