Byzantine emperor
A Byzantine emperor named for his Khazar mother who ruled five years, won one sharp victory over the Abbasids in Syria, and died of tuberculosis at thirty — leaving his wife Irene to steer the throne for their child.
Leo was born in January 750 to Emperor Constantine V and Empress Tzitzak, a Khazar princess whose heritage gave him his byname. Elevated to co-emperor at one year old in 751, he married Irene of Athens in 769. When Constantine V died campaigning against the Bulgars in September 775, Leo became senior emperor. In 778 he raided Abbasid Syria and won a decisive battle outside Germanikeia. He died of tuberculosis on 8 September 780, and his underage son Constantine VI took the throne with Irene as regent.
