Biography

About

Kurt Alois Josef Johann von Schuschnigg became Chancellor of Austria in 1934 after his predecessor Engelbert Dollfuss was assassinated. He considered Austria a German state and Austrians to be Germans, but stood firmly against Adolf Hitler's drive to absorb the country into the Third Reich. When his efforts to preserve independence collapsed in 1938, he resigned. The Nazis arrested him after the Anschluss, held him in solitary confinement, and interned him in concentration camps until the United States Army liberated him in 1945.
