Syrian archeologist
The Syrian archaeologist who spent over forty years guarding Palmyra's ruins — and was beheaded by the Islamic State in 2015 for refusing to abandon them.
Khaled Mohamad al-Asaad was born on 1 January 1932. He became head of antiquities in Palmyra, the ancient Syrian city designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and held the position for more than four decades. When the Islamic State advanced on the city in 2015, al-Asaad remained. On 18 August 2015, at the age of 83, he was publicly beheaded by the group.
