King of the Theban Seventeenth Dynasty
The Egyptian king who died mid-campaign to drive foreign rulers from the Nile Delta — too soon to see his brother finish the war he and their father started.
Kamose inherited the throne of Thebes during the Second Intermediate Period, when the Hyksos controlled much of Egypt. His father, Seqenenre Tao, had launched military campaigns against them and died in battle. Kamose pressed the fight, ruling for approximately three to five years and mounting decisive strikes northward. He did not live to see the Hyksos expelled. After his death, his mother Ahhotep I is thought to have acted as regent, continuing the military push until his brother Ahmose I completed the conquest, unified Egypt, and founded the Eighteenth Dynasty.
