Seventh king of the Seventeenth dynasty of Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period
A king who held Thebes while foreign rulers commanded the Delta — one fragmented Egypt, two thrones, and a reign measured in friction rather than years.
Senakhtenre Ahmose, also called Ahmose the Elder, ruled the Seventeenth Dynasty from Thebes during the Second Intermediate Period, when Egypt split along a fault line of power. Upper Egypt answered to him; Lower Egypt bowed to the Hyksos of the Fifteenth Dynasty. His reign over the Theban region was brief, a flicker in a century of division. He died around 1560 or 1558 BC at the latest, leaving behind a kingdom still waiting to be whole.
