Crown prince of Numidia and King of Mauretania (c. 48 BC - AD 23)
A king who ruled two North African kingdoms and wrote books that Rome's elite actually read — the son of a defeated enemy turned scholar-prince, married to Cleopatra's daughter.
Juba II was born around 48 BC, son of Juba I, and inherited a losing hand: his father's kingdom fell, leaving him a captive child in the empire's care. Rome raised him, educated him, and sent him back as client king of Numidia around 30 BC, then Mauretania from 25 BC until his death in AD 23. He ruled for nearly half a century, but his other life ran parallel — he wrote extensively, earning respect in Roman intellectual circles as a scholar and author. His first wife was Cleopatra Selene II, daughter of Cleopatra VII and Mark Antony, and she ruled beside him until her death.
