Mourinho lasted one season as a Portuguese midfielder before retiring at 24 and sliding into coaching as Bobby Robson's interpreter at Sporting and Porto, then following him to Barcelona as an assistant. After brief head-coaching stints at Benfica and União de Leiria, he returned to Porto in 2002 and won the UEFA Champions League in 2004, enough to land him at Chelsea, where his "I think I'm special one" remark at his first press conference earned him a tabloid nickname and two Premier League titles. He took Inter Milan to an Italian treble in 2010 - the first in the club's history - then broke domestic records winning La Liga with Real Madrid in 2011-12, becoming the fifth manager to win leagues in four countries. A second Chelsea spell brought another title but ended poorly in 2015; spells at Manchester United and Tottenham both soured, though he won the Europa League and three cups at United. At Roma he lifted the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022, making him the only manager to win all three current UEFA club competitions, before joining Fenerbahçe in 2024 and being sacked a year later after missing Champions League qualification.
