Mourinho lasted one season as a Portuguese midfielder before retiring at 24 and sliding into coaching as Bobby Robson's interpreter at Sporting and Porto, then following him to Barcelona as an assistant. After brief head-coaching stints at Benfica and União de Leiria, he returned to Porto in 2002 and won the UEFA Champions League in 2004, enough to land him at Chelsea, where his "I think I'm special one" remark at his first press conference earned him a tabloid nickname and two Premier League titles.
