When you kill these Flemish boars, do not spare the sows; them I would have spitted.
Queen regnant of Navarre and queen consort of France
A queen who held two crowns but ruled from one throne—Navarre stayed under French governors while she commanded Champagne directly, raised armies, and took an invading count prisoner herself.
Joan inherited Navarre and Champagne at one year old in 1274, though French governors ran Navarre while she kept her hands on Champagne. She married Philip IV of France, adding Queen of France to her titles. When Henry III, Count of Bar, invaded Champagne, she raised an army, beat him back, and had him thrown in prison. In 1305 she founded the College of Navarre in Paris. She died that same year, likely from complications of childbirth, having never set foot in Navarre as its ruling queen.
