Jean was born the eldest son of Grand Duchess Charlotte and named heir apparent in 1938, but the Second World War sent the grand ducal family into exile while Germany occupied Luxembourg. He studied at Université Laval in Quebec, then volunteered for the British Army's Irish Guards in 1942. After graduating from Sandhurst and receiving his commission in 1943, he fought in the Normandy landings and the Battle for Caen, eventually joining the Allied forces that liberated his own homeland.
