Born in 1758, Monroe fought in the Continental Army before studying law under Thomas Jefferson. He opposed ratifying the Constitution, then pivoted into a Senate career where he led the emerging Democratic-Republican Party. As Jefferson's envoy, he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, nearly doubling the country's size.
