About this person
Jacob Zuma was born in rural Nkandla in 1942, joined the ANC at 17, and served a decade as a political prisoner on Robben Island before going into exile in 1975 to run the party's intelligence operations. After the ANC's unbanning in 1990, he climbed quickly - deputy secretary general, national chair, then deputy president under Thabo Mbeki from 1999 to 2005, when Mbeki sacked him over corruption tied to the Arms Deal. Zuma fought back, rallied a left coalition, and ousted Mbeki at the 2007 Polokwane conference. He won the presidency in 2009 and launched ambitious infrastructure spending and a nuclear deal with Russia, but his second term unraveled under scandal: the Public Protector found he'd improperly used state funds on his Nkandla home, the Constitutional Court ruled he'd violated his oath, and the Gupta family's grip on his government became the subject of the Zondo Commission's state capture inquiry. The ANC recalled him in early 2018 and he resigned in February.
