In Zimbabwe, I was booed by the whole stadium. I had to apologise to the people of Zimbabwe for the attacks. I do not want to call it xenophobic attacks.
The independence, the standing and the role of the Reserve Bank is sacrosanct. It will remain independent, as clearly stated in our constitution.
We now have a great opportunity to put land to good use, to take it out of those hands, lazy hands I might say, and put it into the working hands of our people.

Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa was born 17 November 1952 and rose through anti-apartheid activism to lead the National Union of Mineworkers, South Africa's largest trade union. In 1991 he became ANC secretary general under Nelson Mandela and served as the party's chief negotiator in the talks that dismantled apartheid, then chaired the Constitutional Assembly after the 1994 elections. He walked away from politics in 1996 and spent the next sixteen years in business - McDonald's South Africa, the MTN board, Lonmin, the Shanduka Group - amassing a net worth over R6.4 billion by 2018. He returned in December 2012, served as deputy president under Jacob Zuma from 2014, and took over the presidency in February 2018 the day after Zuma resigned. Re-elected in 2024, he now governs without the ANC's old parliamentary majority, a first in the party's three-decade hold on power.
