Lutnick joined Cantor Fitzgerald in 1983 under founder B. Gerald Cantor and rose to president by 1990. When Cantor's health failed in 1995, Lutnick sued in Delaware court claiming the founder lacked mental capacity to control succession, won a settlement giving him management control, and took the chairman role after Cantor died in 1996. He pushed the firm into electronic trading with eSpeed. On September 11, 2001, Cantor Fitzgerald lost 658 employees in the attacks - including Howard's brother Gary - and Lutnick immediately stopped salaries to victims' families, drawing sharp criticism. After backing Hillary Clinton in 2016, he switched to fundraising for Trump in 2020 and 2024, championed Trump's tariff plans, and co-chaired the 2024 transition team. Trump nominated him for Commerce in November 2024, the Senate confirmed him in February 2025, and Time named him one of the 100 most influential people that year.
