David Miscavige was born April 30, 1960, and joined Scientology's Sea Org as a teenager, working directly under founder L. Ron Hubbard in the Commodore's Messenger Organization. He rose quickly through the ranks in the early 1980s, becoming chairman of the board of the Religious Technology Center in 1987, a year after Hubbard's death - the corporation that controls Scientology's trademarks and the position that made him the organization's second leader. Since then, allegations have mounted: former members and lawsuits accuse him of physical and emotional abuse of subordinates, human trafficking, forced family separations, child abuse, and coercive fundraising. The FBI investigated; courts heard claims of sexual assault of children by senior executives under his watch. Miscavige and church representatives deny the majority of the accusations and routinely attack the credibility of those who make them.
