Henry spent his youth in exile after his father rebelled against two emperors, finding refuge with clergy who shaped his devotion early. He became Duke of Bavaria in 995, then seized the German throne in 1002 when his second cousin Otto III died suddenly without an heir, defeating rival claimants to be crowned king.
