Queen consort of Sweden (1907-1930)
Queen of Sweden for over two decades, she worked the levers behind the throne — pushing conservative politics as democracy reshaped the country and backing Germany openly while Europe tore itself apart.
Born Sophie Marie Viktoria on 7 August 1862, she became Queen of Sweden on 8 December 1907 when her husband ascended as King Gustaf V. As Sweden moved toward democracy, she didn't retreat to ceremony — she stayed politically active, anchoring the conservative end. When the First World War broke, her pro-German stance put her at odds with a country trying to stay neutral. She held the title until her death on 4 April 1930.
