About

Born in 1731, Cavendish came to chemistry and physics with a temperament better suited to monasteries than salons: shy, methodical, and uninterested in credit. In 1766 he published a paper describing "inflammable air" — hydrogen — noting its density and the fact that it formed water when burned. Lavoisier would later repeat the work and name the element. Cavendish moved on: atmospheric composition, the synthesis of water, electrical forces, a mechanical theory of heat. His most famous work came late, an experiment so precise it measured the density of the Earth itself, a feat that allowed late…
