Biography

About

Born around 1478, Ayşe Hafsa Sultan entered the Ottoman court as a concubine to Selim I. When her son Suleiman took the throne in 1520, she became the first to bear the official title Valide Sultan, formalizing a role that had existed informally before. From that moment until her death on 19 March 1534, she stood among the most influential figures in the empire, shaping policy and patronage from within the palace. Her tenure set the template for the mothers who would follow.
