Something wrong?Israel's Foreign Minister since late 2024, a politician whose career is a case study in party loyalty tested and abandoned: elected under Netanyahu in Likud, broke away to challenge him, lost, formed his own party, joined rivals, left again, then returned to serve in the same government he once fought to topple.

Gideon Sa'ar entered the Knesset in 2003 as a Likud member and spent a decade in Netanyahu's cabinets, running education from 2009 to 2013 and interior for a year after. He stepped away in 2014, came back in 2019, and took a shot at unseating Netanyahu for the party leadership - it didn't work. So he left Likud, launched New Hope, and served as Justice Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the Bennett-Lapid coalition that finally broke Netanyahu's grip in 2021. A year later he merged New Hope into an alliance with Benny Gantz's National Unity and found himself back in opposition after the 2022 elections. When the Gaza war began, National Unity joined the government and Sa'ar became a minister without portfolio and observer in the war cabinet. He pulled out in March 2024, resigned, then reversed course and rejoined the government that September. Two months later Netanyahu appointed him Foreign Minister, replacing Israel Katz. He resigned from the Knesset in July 2025.
