About

Born around 1478 to pig farmers in Trujillo, Pizarro left Spain for the New World and crossed the Isthmus of Panama with Balboa, becoming among the first Europeans to see the Pacific from the Americas. After two failed expeditions and a stint as mayor of Panama City, he secured crown permission in 1529 for a third attempt on Peru. He moved inland during an Inca civil war, founded San Miguel de Piura, then captured Emperor Atahualpa at Cajamarca in November 1532 using Spanish guns and cavalry.
