About

Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta was born in the Kingdom of Navarre on 7 April 1506, became a companion of Ignatius of Loyola, and in 1534 joined six others in taking vows of poverty and chastity at Montmartre. As a representative of the Portuguese Empire, he led extensive missionary work across Asia, evangelizing in Portuguese India and writing to King John III in 1546 with proposals to strengthen the faith in Goa — a letter some historians read as a call for what became the Goan Inquisition, though others dispute that interpretation.
