About

Born Íñigo López de Oñaz y Loyola around 23 October 1491 in Spain's Basque country, he came to faith as a former soldier with an eye for structure and rigor. In Paris in 1541, he and six companions formed the Society of Jesus, envisioning it as an engine of missionary work and teaching. He added a fourth vow to the usual three — obedience to the Pope for projects ordained by the pontiff — and the Jesuits became instrumental in leading the Counter-Reformation.
