Braun met Hitler in Munich in 1929 at seventeen, working as an assistant and model for his personal photographer Heinrich Hoffmann. She began seeing him regularly two years later and attempted suicide twice during their early relationship. By 1936 she was installed at the Berghof near Berchtesgaden, living a sheltered existence throughout the war as a fixture of Hitler's inner circle but absent from public view until 1944, when her sister married an SS officer on his staff.
