About this person

Born Eric William Melvin on November 9, 1972, he worked the grind of 1990s and early 2000s television, landing a recurring stint on Charmed as Jason Dean before Grey's Anatomy made him a lead in 2006. The six-year run as Dr. Mark Sloan opened the door to films - X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine's Day, Burlesque - and then to another anchor role: Captain Tom Chandler on TNT's The Last Ship from 2014 to 2018. In 2019 he joined Euphoria as Cal Jacobs, a part he carried through 2026, and picked up a new lead as FBI Special Agent Nathan Blythe in Amazon's Countdown in 2025. That same year he announced he had been diagnosed with ALS. He died February 19, 2026, at 53.
