Marshall Bruce Mathers III released Infinite in 1996 and the Slim Shady EP in 1997 before signing with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and breaking through with The Slim Shady LP in 1999. The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) and The Eminem Show (2002) each sold over a million copies in their first week, with the latter becoming the best-selling album worldwide in 2002 and the best-selling hip-hop album ever made. After Encore (2004) he disappeared into prescription drug addiction, resurfaced with Relapse (2009) and Recovery (2010) - the latter the year's global bestseller - and has since placed every album at number one on the Billboard 200, including The Death of Slim Shady in 2024. He starred in 8 Mile in 2002; 'Lose Yourself' held the Hot 100 for twelve weeks and made him the first hip-hop act to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song. With over 220 million records sold, fifteen Grammys, and first-ballot induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he remains the commercial apex of rap and a chronicle of lower-income American anger.
