Emeric was crowned co-king by his father Béla III in 1184 and took full power in 1196, but his brother Andrew immediately rebelled, forcing Emeric to cede him Croatia and Dalmatia just to end the civil war. He aligned with Rome against the Bosnian Church, expanded his grip over Serbia during its own internal chaos, and became the first Hungarian king to claim the title King of Serbia and use the Árpád stripes as a personal emblem. In 1202 he stood by while Venetian forces and Fourth Crusade soldiers seized his coastal city of Zadar, and he couldn't check Bulgaria's encroachment on his southern border. He died at thirty, having crowned his four-year-old son Ladislaus III shortly before the end.
