A medieval king who spent half his reign fighting his own brother for control of the throne, then watched crusaders he couldn't stop sack one of his own cities on their way to Constantinople.
Emeric was crowned co-king by his father Béla III in 1184 and took full power in 1196, but his brother Andrew immediately rebelled, forcing Emeric to cede him Croatia and Dalmatia just to end the civil war. He aligned with Rome against the Bosnian Church, expanded his grip over Serbia during its own internal chaos, and became the first Hungarian king to claim the title King of Serbia and use the Árpád stripes as a personal emblem.
