King of Hungary (1239-1272)
He was crowned king at six, spent his teenage years fighting his own father in a civil war over the eastern half of Hungary, then ruled for exactly two years before dying at thirty-two — just after his son was kidnapped by a rebel lord.
Stephen was born before 18 October 1239, the oldest son of King Béla IV and Maria Laskarina. His father had him crowned at age six and made him Duke of Slavonia; still a child, he married Elizabeth, daughter of a Cuman chieftain Béla had settled in the Great Hungarian Plain. In 1257 Béla appointed him Duke of Transylvania, then Duke of Styria the next year — but the Styrian nobles, backed by Ottokar II of Bohemia, rebelled and drove out his troops.
