Stephen V of Hungary

Stephen was born before 18 October 1239, the oldest son of King Béla IV and Maria Laskarina. His father had him crowned at age six and made him Duke of Slavonia; still a child, he married Elizabeth, daughter of a Cuman chieftain Béla had settled in the Great Hungarian Plain. In 1257 Béla appointed him Duke of Transylvania, then Duke of Styria the next year - but the Styrian nobles, backed by Ottokar II of Bohemia, rebelled and drove out his troops. After Ottokar routed Stephen and Béla's combined army at Kressenbrunn on 12 July 1260, Stephen abandoned Styria and returned to Transylvania. Two years later he forced his father to surrender all lands east of the Danube and took the title of junior king; by 1264 they were at war, Stephen convinced Béla meant to disinherit him. They made peace in 1266 but trust never returned. Stephen succeeded without trouble when Béla died on 3 May 1270, though his sister Anna and his father's advisors fled to Bohemia. He defeated an invasion by Ottokar II in 1271, but the following summer a rebel lord captured and imprisoned his son Ladislaus. Stephen fell ill shortly after and died on 6 August 1272.
