Born in Pretoria to money, Musk moved to Canada in 1989, earned degrees from Penn in 1997, and rode the first dot-com wave: co-founded Zip2 in 1995, then X.com in 1999, which merged into PayPal and sold to eBay in 2002. That year he founded SpaceX and became a U.S. citizen; two years later he joined Tesla as an early investor, taking the CEO role in 2008. The companies delivered: reusable rockets, mass-market EVs. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015, left, then started rival xAI a decade later. In 2022 he bought Twitter for control of the conversation, rebranded it X, and let moderation loosen. A year of conspicuous support for Trump - the largest donor in 2024 - earned him a White House perch running DOGE in early 2025; a public feud ended that by May. The arc left him richer than anyone alive and more polarizing than most: hailed for forcing industries forward, condemned for spreading conspiracy and hate.
