Edward Snowden is read about 8,519 times a day, in 90 languages.
A typical day, 30 days to 15 October 2026
The middle day of the days counted, so one week of news cannot move it. The line under it is the last 390 days, one point a day.
Something wrong? In 2013, he walked out of his NSA contractor job with thousands of classified files and handed them to reporters in Hong Kong - an act that split the world between those who saw a whistleblower and those who saw a traitor, and landed him in permanent Russian exile under espionage charges.

I grew up in the shadow of government. Both my parents worked for the government, and I expected that I would, as well. September 11th happened when I was 18 years old...

Born in 1983 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Snowden moved through community college and a never-finished master's at Liverpool before entering intelligence work - first the CIA in 2006, then Dell managing NSA systems in 2009, then a two-month stint at Booz Allen Hamilton in 2013 with one purpose: gather more documents. That May he flew to Hong Kong and met journalists Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, Barton Gellman, and Ewen MacAskill, releasing thousands of files that exposed global surveillance programs run by the NSA and Five Eyes with help from telecom companies and European governments. The U.S. unsealed espionage charges on his birthday, June 21, revoked his passport, and he spent a month stranded in Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport before Russia granted asylum. He became president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation in 2016, married Lindsay Mills in 2017, published his memoir Permanent Record in 2019, and watched a federal court rule in 2020 that one of the programs he'd exposed was illegal. In 2022, he became a Russian citizen.
