Born Durgi Tudu on 20 June 1958, she started as a clerk in Odisha's Irrigation and Power Department from 1979 to 1983, then taught in Rairangpur through the mid-nineties. She entered the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2000, representing Rairangpur until 2009, and served as a state minister from 2000 to 2004. In 2015 she became governor of Jharkhand, holding the post longer than anyone before her, until 2021. The following year the Bharatiya Janata Party fielded her for president — and she won, becoming the first president born after independence.
