Pranab Mukherjee entered national politics in 1969 when Indira Gandhi helped him win a Rajya Sabha seat, and he became one of her most trusted lieutenants, joining her cabinet in 1973 and serving as Finance Minister from 1982 to 1984. After Rajiv Gandhi dropped him in 1986, he formed his own party, the Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress, which merged back with Congress in 1989 following reconciliation. He returned to power under P. V. Narasimha Rao, heading the Planning Commission in 1991 and serving as foreign minister in 1995, then backed Sonia Gandhi's rise to party leadership in 1998. When the Congress-led UPA won in 2004, Mukherjee entered the Lok Sabha for the first time and cycled through Defence, External Affairs, and Finance again under Manmohan Singh before securing the presidency in July 2012, defeating his opponent with 70 per cent of the electoral-college vote. He served until 2017, citing health complications, and received the Bharat Ratna in 2019 - two years after becoming the first former president to address an RSS event.
