About this person

Born in a village near Vicenza in 1946, she met Rajiv Gandhi during language classes in Cambridge, married him in 1968, and moved to New Delhi to live with her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi, then prime minister. She stayed out of public life even when her husband became prime minister, but his 1991 assassination changed the equation. She declined the party leadership then, finally joining politics in 1997 after persistent appeals, and took over as Congress president in 1998. Under her command the party built the United Progressive Alliance coalition that won in 2004; she turned down the prime ministership but ran the coalition and National Advisory Council, overseeing passage of the Right to Information Act, MGNREGA, and the Food Security Bill. She led Congress for twenty-two years until 2017, returned as interim president in 2019, and now sits in the Rajya Sabha - her foreign birth and the National Herald case trailing her, her influence over Indian politics undeniable.
