Russian chemist (1834–1907)
He predicted elements that didn't exist yet — and got their properties right. Mendeleev's periodic table turned chemistry from a catalog into a map with empty spaces where new discoveries would land.
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born on 27 January 1834 in Russia. He formulated the periodic law and built a version of the periodic table that did more than organize known elements — it exposed gaps. Using his system, he corrected accepted values for uranium's valence and atomic weight, then went further: he predicted the properties of three elements not yet discovered. Germanium, gallium, and scandium were all found later, matching his descriptions. The synthetic element mendelevium carries his name. He died on 20 January 1907.
