Summary
Updated 2026-06-21

He proved magnetism shifts at temperature, built instruments so sensitive they could weigh invisible rays, and shared a Nobel for uncovering radioactivity — then died under a horse-drawn wagon at 46, cutting short one of physics' rare true partnerships.

Biography

About

Pierre Curie built his career on precision: he pioneered work in crystallography and magnetism in an era when the invisible forces of matter were just beginning to yield to measurement. In 1903, he and his wife Marie won half the Nobel Prize in Physics for their investigations into radioactivity, making them the first married couple to take the honor and starting a family streak that would reach five Nobels. Three years later, on a rainy Paris street, a wagon wheel ended it — he was 46, his work unfinished, the Curie name only beginning its rise.
