About this person

David Chappelle debuted his first half-hour special in 1998 and co-wrote Half Baked the same year. By 2003 he'd co-created Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central, a sketch series that became a cultural engine - then quit mid-production of season three and vanished from the spotlight. He returned to stand-up, grinding clubs and theaters across the country while Esquire called him "the comic genius of America" in 2006. Rolling Stone ranked him No. 9 on their all-time stand-up list in 2017. A year earlier he'd signed a $20-million-per-release deal with Netflix and began releasing specials that swept the Grammys - six wins for Best Comedy Album between 2018 and 2023. He hosted Saturday Night Live twice, winning Emmys both times, and collected the Mark Twain Prize in 2019. The arc bent from escape to return, and he owned both ends.
