An ancient Athenian philosopher who pushed Heraclitus's ideas to their logical extreme and caught Plato's attention while he was still forming his worldview.
Cratylus worked in Athens during the mid-to-late 5th century BC, where he became known for taking Heraclitean philosophy further than most were willing to go. His thinking left enough of an impression on the young Plato that the latter devoted an entire dialogue to him—the Cratylus—which remains the primary window into his ideas. The influence ran deep enough to shape some of Plato's early intellectual development before he charted his own course.
