Born in Soli, Cilicia around 279 BC, Chrysippus moved to Athens as a young man and studied under Cleanthes, the second head of the Stoic school. When Cleanthes died around 230 BC, Chrysippus inherited the leadership and set about expanding the doctrines of Zeno of Citium into something systematically new. He built an original propositional logic to map how the universe worked and where human action fit inside a fatalistic cosmos.
