Chester Charles Bennington was born March 20, 1976, and spent most of his life contending with depression and substance abuse that began in childhood. He broke through as Linkin Park's lead vocalist with Hybrid Theory in 2000, an album that became the bestselling debut of its decade and earned Diamond certification by 2005. Six more studio albums followed between Meteora in 2003 and One More Light in 2017, each charting in the Billboard 200's top three. He launched Dead by Sunrise as a side project in 2005, releasing Out of Ashes in 2009, and spent 2013 to 2015 fronting Stone Temple Pilots before returning his focus to Linkin Park. On July 20, 2017, he was found dead at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California - the Los Angeles County Coroner ruled it suicide by hanging. Hit Parader later placed him at number 46 on their list of the top 100 metal vocalists of all time, and Billboard's Dan Weiss wrote that Bennington "turned nu-metal universal".
